Cyberpunk 2077 has received another substantial update nearly six years after its original launch, with version 2.5 adding a new quest connected to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, mod support on consoles, new combat options, guided sightseeing, customization additions and fresh music for Night City.
The update arrives after years of work that transformed the game's post-launch path. CD Projekt Red initially concentrated on fixes and performance improvements following Cyberpunk 2077's troubled debut, before moving into much broader revisions and additions. That effort ultimately included 2023's Phantom Liberty expansion. Update 2.5 shows that the studio still sees room to build on the open-world RPG while it develops several future projects, including the Cyberpunk sequel currently known as Project Orion.
At the center of the new patch is a quest described as a prequel story for Netflix's upcoming Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2. The addition further connects the game to the animated side of the Cyberpunk universe, bringing another story perspective into Night City rather than treating the game and television projects as entirely separate continuities. Details on the quest's full plot have not been outlined here, but its role as a lead-in to the second animated season makes it one of the update's most notable pieces of new narrative content.
A Larger Night City, Not Just a Technical Patch
Associate game director Pawel Sasko said the combined features in 2.5 are intended to make Night City feel richer, more coherent and more believable for players. In his view, the ongoing updates are justified by the setting itself: Night City continues to offer opportunities for new stories and new ways for players to engage with it.

"This world keeps giving us reasons to return to it," Sasko said, describing the connection between Edgerunners 2 and the new game update as part of a shared universe built from different stories, people and media around one city.
That idea helps explain why 2.5 is more than a conventional round of maintenance. The update is built around both narrative continuity and player expression. The Edgerunners-related quest looks outward, linking Cyberpunk 2077 to the broader franchise, while features such as mods, clothing and weapon changes look inward, offering players more control over how they experience the city.
This is a significant distinction for a game that has already undergone major reinvention. Cyberpunk 2077's reputation is now very different from the one it carried at launch, largely because CD Projekt Red spent years addressing foundational issues and later reshaping key systems. A new patch at this stage is not simply about repairing what is broken. It is about extending a version of Night City that has become a continuing platform for role-playing, exploration and franchise storytelling.
Edgerunners 2 Gets a Game Connection
The new quest is positioned as a prequel to Cyberpunk: Edgerunners 2, creating a direct bridge between the game and Netflix animation. The first Edgerunners series demonstrated how effectively the Cyberpunk setting can support stories beyond V's journey, focusing on different characters and a different emotional lens while retaining Night City's visual identity, corporate pressure and dangerous ambitions.
Update 2.5 continues that approach. Rather than presenting the animated project as an isolated adaptation, CD Projekt Red is using the game to establish context around it. For returning players, that means the update has the potential to make a revisit feel timely even after the main story and Phantom Liberty. For players drawn in through the show, it offers a path into the game world that is explicitly tied to the next screen story.
Sasko framed this kind of cross-media relationship as the ideal for a shared universe. Different formats can tell different stories, but the city should feel as though it carries the memory of all of them. That ambition is especially appropriate for Night City, a place defined by its districts, institutions, myths, music and casualties. New characters may come and go, but the city remains the common ground.
Console Mod Support Opens New Possibilities
One of 2.5's most consequential additions is mod support for consoles. Modding has long been an important part of the PC role-playing-game community, allowing players to alter visual presentation, add or adjust systems, refine quality-of-life details and create personalized ways to play. Bringing official support to console players is therefore a meaningful expansion of the game's customization possibilities.
The update does not make every PC mod automatically available everywhere, and players should expect console support to operate within platform-specific rules and approved systems. Even so, the addition represents a major shift in what PlayStation and Xbox users can expect from Cyberpunk 2077 after launch. It gives more people a chance to tailor their Night City experience and could help maintain a lively community around the game as the franchise moves toward its next chapter.
There is also a broader symbolic value to the feature. Cyberpunk 2077's recovery has involved listening to player feedback and making substantial changes over time. Console mod support is another example of the team extending the game's life beyond its original form, this time by giving players a more active role in shaping their own sessions.
Dual-Wielding and a New Way to See the City
Update 2.5 also adds dual-wielding for pistols and revolvers. The feature brings a more flamboyant combat option to a game already known for mixing firearms, cyberware, stealth and hacking. Pistols and revolvers have always suited Cyberpunk 2077's style, whether players lean toward precision shooting, fast close-range aggression or character builds centered on a particular weapon. Being able to wield two of them adds another layer of visual flair and combat identity.
As with any new combat mechanic in an established RPG, the most interesting question will be how players fold it into existing builds. Some will likely approach it as a purely stylish option for role-playing a particular kind of mercenary, while others may look for ways to incorporate it into optimized loadouts. Either way, it gives veteran players a reason to rethink familiar encounters and experiment with a different rhythm during firefights.
For a quieter alternative, the update introduces City Tours. This guided feature offers players a curated look around Night City, emphasizing the setting itself rather than missions, combat or progression. It is an apt addition for an open world packed with striking architecture and distinct neighborhoods. Players who have spent dozens of hours driving between objectives may welcome a structured excuse to slow down and appreciate the city's scale and detail.
City Tours also fits the update's central theme. If 2.5 is intended to make Night City more believable and coherent, then helping players observe the city as a place--not merely a mission hub--is a natural step. Guided exploration can highlight environmental storytelling that is easy to miss during high-speed travel or tense quests, and it may be especially appealing to returning players who know the game well but want a different way to inhabit its world.
Clothes, Radio and Reasons to Return
Additional clothing sets are included in the patch, expanding the appearance options available for V. Fashion has always been part of Cyberpunk 2077's identity, both as an expression of character and as part of the larger visual language of Night City. More wardrobe choices support the same player-ownership goal behind the mod support and combat additions: two players can follow the same story while presenting radically different versions of V.
A new radio station is also part of update 2.5. Music is one of the most immediate tools for making an open world feel alive, particularly in a game where driving through illuminated streets is a major part of the experience. A fresh station means more variety for those long rides between gigs, story missions and casual exploration, while also adding another small but meaningful piece of atmosphere to the city.
Taken separately, clothing, a radio station, dual-wielding and tours might sound like a collection of disparate extras. Together, however, they align with the stated goal of giving players more ways to make Night City their own. The patch offers story context, practical customization, new combat expression and environmental immersion instead of focusing on only one part of the game.
CD Projekt Red's Expanding Future
The continued work on Cyberpunk 2077 is notable because CD Projekt Red has a full development slate. The studio is working on The Witcher 4, a remake of The Witcher, Project Orion and a new original property known as Hadar. Its upcoming plans also include new downloadable content for The Witcher 3.
With so many projects in development, another major Cyberpunk 2077 update could have seemed unlikely. Instead, 2.5 indicates that the studio still considers the current game an important part of its broader Cyberpunk plans. The Edgerunners connection makes that especially clear: the existing RPG remains a place where new franchise stories can begin, intersect and be experienced directly.
Cyberpunk 2077 Update 2.5 is therefore both an addition for current players and a statement about the series' future. Night City is not being treated as a closed chapter while Project Orion is built. It remains a living setting, one CD Projekt Red is still willing to revisit when a new story, a new feature or a new way to personalize the experience calls for it.
For players who left after completing the campaign or Phantom Liberty, the combination of an Edgerunners 2 prequel quest, console mod support, dual-wielding, City Tours, new clothing and a radio station presents a substantial set of reasons to install the game again. And for those still roaming Night City, update 2.5 reinforces a message the game's long post-launch history has made increasingly clear: there may yet be more to discover in the city of dreams.
