Solo developer TYB Games announces Covert Crew, a superhero-themed SRPG inspired by classic Fire Emblem, set to release on Nintendo Switch in 2024 with a nostalgic pixel art style.

Covert Crew: A Superhero SRPG Coming to Switch

In a delightful blend of classic gaming nostalgia and superhero excitement, solo developer TYB Games has officially announced its latest project, Covert Crew, scheduled to land on Nintendo Switch sometime in 2024. Covert Crew merges the tactical allure of superhero adventures with strategic RPG elements reminiscent of the beloved Fire Emblem series.

At the heart of Covert Crew is its strategic grid-based combat system that will feel familiar to fans of traditional turn-based tactical games. Players will assemble a diverse team of over twenty superheroes, each endowed with unique powers. These characters aren't just powerful—they're integral to the story and gameplay, offering a variety of tactical options on the battlefield.

The game's visual style pays homage to the pixel art of classic video games, providing a nostalgic yet fresh aesthetic. Alongside the standard battle scenarios, players will enjoy zoomed-in attack animations that add excitement and drama to each encounter. Another standout feature is the "Power Pentagon," an innovative mechanic that replaces the traditional "Weapon Triangle" system found in many RPGs. This new system categorizes powers into five types—Energy, Elemental, Spatial, Physical, and Mystical—each with its own strengths and weaknesses, adding a layer of depth to combat strategies.

In addition to the main story mode, Covert Crew includes a 'Combat Simulator' mode. This roguelike feature introduces procedurally generated maps where players can test their skills, refine strategies, and unlock new abilities and modulators. It's an excellent way for players to develop their characters further and experiment with different tactical approaches.

Further enhancing the tactical gameplay are the power modulators that players can equip to their heroes. These modulators allow for the customization of a hero’s abilities, adjusting aspects like power, speed, and even adding effects that can tilt the battlefield in one’s favor. As the game progresses, players can unlock and craft new modulators, continually evolving their team's capabilities.

Covert Crew's origin stems from its developer's passions and personal experiences during the lockdown. Daniel, the lone force behind TYB Games, revisited the classic Fire Emblem titles while binge-watching superhero films from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and shows like Amazon's The Boys. Inspired, he taught himself coding instead of spending countless hours on games like Animal Crossing. Covert Crew is the culmination of blending his love for strategy games and superhero narratives into one coherent, engaging experience.

While a specific release date in 2024 hasn’t been confirmed yet, anticipation is building for this unique entrant into the Nintendo Switch’s lineup of games. It promises to bring a fresh perspective to the tactical RPG genre, combining beloved elements of classic games with the thrill of superhero fiction.

Fans of tactical RPGs and superhero tales should keep an eye on Covert Crew. Its development reflects a deep love for genre-defining classics, and it might just offer that perfect blend of strategy, nostalgia, and superhero excitement that many gamers are craving. As the release window approaches, more updates and features of this promising game are expected to be unveiled.
