Meta announces the immediate closure of Ready at Dawn, developers of The Order: 1886 and contributors to VR, to align with Reality Labs' budgetary needs and future VR strategies.

Closure of Ready at Dawn Studio by Meta Announced

Ready at Dawn, a game development studio renowned for its creation of the PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886, as well as several successful titles for the PSP including entries in the God of War series, has been closed by Meta. This decision was implemented with immediate effect, surprising both gamers and industry insiders. Prior to its acquisition by Meta in 2020, Ready at Dawn had established a name for itself not only through its console and handheld games but by venturing into the virtual reality (VR) landscape curated by the then-named Facebook’s Oculus branch.

The Order: 1886, launched in February 2015, was the title that significantly raised the profile of Ready at Dawn among PlayStation enthusiasts. The game, set in a richly crafted alternate history where an order of knights protects the world from monstrous foes, combined cinematic storytelling with tight third-person shooting mechanics. Despite receiving mixed reviews, mainly due to its short length and limited gameplay variety, it developed a cult following who appreciated its artistic ambition and narrative.

Beyond The Order, Ready at Dawn was pivotal in creating portable experiences that resonated with gamers. Their contributions to the God of War series, with titles like Chains of Olympus and Ghost of Sparta on the PSP, are often lauded as some of the best the handheld system had to offer. The studio also showed versatility by working on Daxter, a spin-off of the popular Jak and Daxter series, and by porting the beloved Okami to the Nintendo Wii. Their less successful venture into multiplayer games with Deformers, which failed to capture a large audience, nonetheless showcased their willingness to innovate and experiment with new gaming formats.

When Meta acquired Ready at Dawn in 2020, the move was seen as a strategic enhancement for its VR efforts, particularly through the Oculus, now Meta Quest, platforms. Ready at Dawn went on to develop several titles for the Meta Quest headsets, aligning with Meta's ambition to expand its footprints in the immersive VR space. However, the closure of Ready at Dawn has been attributed not to financial issues but to strategic realignments within Meta’s VR division, Reality Labs. According to Android Central, the closure serves to help Reality Labs remain within its budget and focus on projects that promise a more substantial long-term impact on VR development.

The abrupt shutdown has sparked reactions across the gaming community. Ready at Dawn had, over the years, built a robust reputation and many of their titles, particularly The Order: 1886, were often mentioned by PlayStation fans as prime candidates for further development, possibly under Sony’s direct supervision, especially for new VR experiences. Their closure marks the end of a studio that many believed had much more to offer, particularly in narrative-driven games and immersive VR experiences.

The closure of Ready at Dawn serves as a reminder of the volatile nature of the game development industry, where studios can often face sudden changes in fortune, influenced by strategic shifts in larger conglomerates like Meta. This industry reality affects not only the employees and developers but also the fans and communities that grow around these creative hubs. As the gaming industry continues to evolve with a strong push towards immersive VR experiences, the fate of Ready at Dawn highlights the importance of adaptability and strategic alignment in ensuring long-term sustainability and impact.
