The beloved City of Heroes MMO finds new life as fan-run server Homecoming receives an official license from NCSoft, ensuring the game's survival.

City of Heroes Resurrected by Dedicated Fanbase

The massively multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), City of Heroes, experienced an untimely end in November 2012 leaving its dedicated fan community bereft. This unique game, which allowed players to create their own superheroes and roam a city filled with both peril and promise, had developed a strong and passionate following since its initial release in 2004. The closure did not mark the end for City of Heroes; the power of its community would see to that.

After the official servers went dark, fans refused to let their beloved City stay quiet. Private servers sprang up, allowing players to don their virtual capes once more. Despite their dedication, these communities faced a constant threat—official intervention by NCSoft, the company owning the intellectual property rights, which could legally order these servers to shut down.

In a remarkable turn of events, one of these private servers, known as Homecoming, has recently secured an official nod of approval from NCSoft. This explicit permission comes in the form of a license enabling Homecoming to operate legally. This is not just a win for Homecoming, but for the entire City of Heroes community as it significantly reduces the risk of future legal entanglements that could disrupt gameplay.

The Homecoming team has made it clear that players' accounts and their cherished characters are safe. They reassured the community that the access to the server would remain free, with its upkeep and development funded solely through voluntary player donations. This is a significant assurance for players who have invested time and created a multitude of heroes and villains in the expansive universe of City of Heroes.

But the saga doesn’t stop there—the Homecoming server isn’t content with simply keeping the game afloat. The team behind it has been actively developing new content, keeping the world of City of Heroes fresh and engaging. They've introduced an entirely new Archetype, known as the Sentinel, alongside new powersets, and a collection of brand-new stories and missions, breathing new life into the game.

Homecoming currently stands alone in having this official endorsement. Yet, there are other fan-run servers out there, and Homecoming’s leaders have ambitious plans to bring the scattered community together. They're in the process of establishing a "City Council" which will encompass Homecoming's developers as well as representatives from other server groups. Their mission is to unite these different factions under one virtual roof.

As part of this initiative, Homecoming is actively recruiting volunteer developers and Game Masters to help with the ongoing cultivation of the game. They also intend to formalize their status by registering as a non-profit organization (NPO), which demonstrates their commitment to preserving the game as a labor of love rather than a commercial enterprise.

City of Heroes initially launched by Cryptic Studios, was a contemporary of the genre titan World of Warcraft. In Cryptic Studios' transfer of the IP to NCSoft in 2007, many members of the original development team followed suit and continued their work at Paragon Studios. However, the eventual shutdown of Paragon and the game left a void until the player community stepped in.

Appreciation for City of Heroes extends to diverse quarters, including the founders of Rock Paper Shotgun who shared an affinity for the game prior to their website's inception. The game's legacy continues to resonate with fans who have cherished memories of carving out their superhero stories.

For those looking to leap buildings in a single bound, once more or for the first time, Homecoming has published a "Getting Started" guide complete with download instructions and account setup on their website. It's an open invitation for gamers old and new to experience (or re-experience) the world where every player can be a hero or a villain.

The persistence of City of Heroes demonstrates the power of a dedicated fanbase and is a testament to the evergreen appeal of the superhero genre in gaming. With official backing, City of Heroes, and its virtual metropolis, stands tall once again, a beacon of hope and community-driven resurrection in the gaming world.
