The iconic video game series, Castlevania, known for its vampire-hunting themes since the mid-1980s, is set to be transformed into a musical in Japan by the Takarazuka Revue.

Castlevania Series To Debut As a Musical in Japan

The beloved video game series "Castlevania," known for its gothic horror aesthetics and enthralling vampire lore, is stepping into a new limelight. Renowned Japanese theatrical company, Takarazuka Revue, will adapt the series into a musical titled "Castlevania ~Awakening under the Moon~." This venture marks the first time the world of Castlevania will be explored through the medium of musical theater.

"Castlevania," developed by Konami Digital Entertainment, debuted in 1986 and quickly became a fan favorite for its dark themes, intricate storylines, and challenging gameplay. The series follows the epic battles between the Belmont family, renowned vampire hunters, and the immortal vampire Count Dracula, who awakens every hundred years to unleash darkness upon the world.

The narrative richness of Castlevania, combined with its atmospheric settings and memorable characters, provides a fertile ground for adaptation. The Takarazuka Revue, known for its all-female performances and extravagant productions, aims to bring a unique flair to the Castlevania universe. The musical will be performed by the Flower Troupe, one of the five troupes of Takarazuka, led by prominent actress Sea Nagatsuki. Kei Suzuki, who has previously adapted other popular series into musicals, will oversee the script and direction of this ambitious project.

As per the details shared by Famitsu and translated from the official site, this new adaptation promises to provide an original story that stays true to the essence of Castlevania while introducing some unique elements characteristic of Takarazuka's style. The term "musical romance" used in the descriptions hints at an emotional and dramatic narrative, woven with the historical backdrop and horror elements that fans of Castlevania would expect.

The musical is scheduled to run from June 7th to July 20th, 2025, at the Takarazuka Grand Theater. It will then move to the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater from August 16th to September 28th, 2025. Tickets for these performances will go on sale well in advance, with sales starting on May 17th, 2025, for the Takarazuka Grand Theater performances, and on July 13th, 2025, for the Tokyo Takarazuka Theater shows.

The announcement of "Castlevania ~Awakening under the Moon~" has stirred excitement among the series’ fans, especially considering the significant gap since the last main entry in the game series in 2014. Castlevania has remained in public memory, partly due to recent successful adaptations like the animated series on Netflix, which helped introduce the franchise to a broader audience. The musical adds another layer to its cultural footprint, promising a fusion of classic lore with theatrical spectacle.

For those unfamiliar, the Takarazuka Revue is a unique theatrical troupe in Japan, famous for its lavish productions involving all-female casts. This tradition adds a distinctive twist to their adaptations, often bringing a fresh perspective to established narratives. Their involvement in transforming Castlevania into a musical suggests that audiences can expect a visually stunning and emotionally charged performance.

As the performance dates draw closer, more details about the cast, specific plot elements, and how the musical will interpret the game’s world are expected to be revealed. Fans of Castlevania and newcomers alike have a lot to look forward to as this classic saga takes on a new life on stage, promising a thrilling blend of horror, romance, and action in a spectacular theatrical form.
