Beyond Good & Evil 2 is still being developed, and its team has gained another experienced narrative voice. Rik Godwin, lead writer and associate narrative director at Ubisoft Bordeaux, has confirmed that he joined the project several months ago in a support and consulting role.

The update does not bring the sequel any closer to a public release window, nor does it reveal fresh gameplay, platforms, or major story details. Still, after so many years of uncertainty around the project, confirmation that staff are actively contributing to it is meaningful. It is another indication that Ubisoft has not quietly abandoned one of the industry's most famously prolonged game productions.

The sequel has now been in the public consciousness for 18 years since its original announcement. It was later reintroduced at E3 2016, meaning a full decade has also passed since that renewed unveiling. Across that time, Beyond Good & Evil 2 has changed shape, endured long stretches without substantial updates, and prompted understandable questions about whether it could ever emerge as a finished game.

Yet development appears to be continuing. Godwin's addition is the latest visible sign of work moving ahead behind the scenes.

Rik Godwin Joins in a Supporting Narrative Role

Godwin shared that he had become involved with Beyond Good & Evil 2 a few months earlier, helping the project as a consultant and support contributor. The distinction matters: he has not been presented as the game's new lead writer or narrative director. Instead, his role suggests Ubisoft is bringing in additional experience to assist an established team as it develops the game's writing and narrative direction.

Godwin comes from Ubisoft Bordeaux, a studio founded in 2017. Bordeaux has often operated as a support developer within Ubisoft's larger studio network, though it has also taken on more prominent responsibilities. The team led work on Assassin's Creed Mirage and most recently released Claws of Awaji, the sole expansion for Assassin's Creed Shadows.

That background makes Godwin's participation notable. A lead writer and associate narrative director joining a project in a consulting role can provide useful continuity, structural feedback, and additional perspective for a game attempting to bring together a large-scale science-fiction fantasy setting. Beyond Good & Evil 2 has long been associated with an expansive ambition, and maintaining narrative clarity on a project of that scale is no small task.

There is also a practical element to the collaboration. Ubisoft Bordeaux is located in the same country as Ubisoft Montpellier, the studio leading Beyond Good & Evil 2. Montpellier lies south of Bordeaux, and the involvement of Bordeaux personnel reflects how Ubisoft can draw upon expertise from across its internal development network.

A Long Road Since the 2016 Reintroduction

Beyond Good & Evil 2 has occupied an unusual place in gaming history. It is not merely a sequel that has taken a long time to arrive; it has become a project defined by its unusually extended development journey. The game was first announced 18 years ago, then returned to public view during E3 2016 with a new presentation that gave fans reason to believe it had found a path forward.

Since then, however, concrete information has been limited. No release date has been announced, and Ubisoft has not provided a clear indication of when players might expect the game. The long gaps between updates have made every small development noteworthy, whether that means a leadership change, an internal staffing update, or a connection to the broader Beyond Good & Evil universe.

The latest news should not be mistaken for a launch signal. Adding a writer in a support capacity does not establish how close the game may be to completion. It does, however, demonstrate that Ubisoft is continuing to devote people and resources to the project. For a title with such a lengthy and complicated history, that confirmation carries weight on its own.

Fawzi Mesmar and a Renewed Sense of Direction

Recent years have brought signs that the project has been trying to consolidate its direction. Fawzi Mesmar became creative director on Beyond Good & Evil 2, taking on the difficult task of steering a game that had already spent years in development. Since then, the project has appeared to regain some measure of momentum, even if Ubisoft has remained cautious about showing what the current version looks like.

One particularly interesting sign came through the Beyond Good & Evil 20th Anniversary Edition. Characters associated with the sequel appeared in cameos there, reinforcing the idea that Ubisoft still sees a connection between the original game's world and the future of the franchise. Those appearances did not answer the larger questions surrounding the sequel, but they helped make the project feel less detached from the series it is meant to continue.

That matters because the game's eventual form remains uncertain. Its title, presentation, scope, and final structure could all potentially differ from earlier public impressions. After such a lengthy production, it would not be surprising if Ubisoft has revisited major creative choices along the way. For now, the company has not clarified exactly what version of Beyond Good & Evil 2 is being built or when it may be ready to show it again.

Surviving a Difficult Period for Ubisoft

The game's continued existence is especially striking in the context of Ubisoft's wider restructuring earlier this year. Several projects, brands, and development operations were affected during that period, while other games did not make it through the company's changing plans. Among the high-profile casualties was the Prince of Persia: Sands of Time Remake.

Against that backdrop, Beyond Good & Evil 2 surviving is itself a substantial development. A game that has been in the works for nearly two decades could easily have become another title caught in a round of cancellations or internal reprioritization. Instead, Ubisoft has kept the team moving forward, with Mesmar publicly acknowledging the human impact of the broader changes while reaffirming the group's focus.

"Needless to say, I am saddened by the cancellations that has affected my colleagues in other parts of Ubisoft and the industry," Mesmar said at the time. "I urge everyone -- myself included -- to offer support whenever and however they can during these times. We remain committed and focused on delivering a remarkable game for our players to enjoy."

Mesmar's comments do not offer a timetable, but they do make Ubisoft's position clear: the Beyond Good & Evil 2 team remains committed to completing its work.

What This Update Does -- and Does Not -- Mean

For fans, it is important to keep expectations measured. Godwin joining as a consultant is encouraging, but it is not equivalent to a reveal, a release target, or proof that the game is nearing its final stages. Ubisoft has not announced when it will next show Beyond Good & Evil 2, and no release information accompanied this staffing update.

At the same time, it would be unfair to dismiss the news as meaningless. Long-running productions need active leadership, specialist support, and experienced contributors to reach the finish line. A narrative professional with recent leadership experience on major Ubisoft releases becoming involved is a concrete indication of ongoing work.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 remains one of gaming's biggest unanswered questions. Its extended history has made skepticism entirely reasonable, and the lack of a release date means there is still no guarantee of when, or even exactly how, players will finally experience it. But the evidence available now points to a project that remains alive: it has leadership, continuing development support, connections to the series through the anniversary release, and a place within Ubisoft despite a period of major internal change.

For now, Rik Godwin's involvement adds another small but tangible chapter to that story. The wait continues, but so does Beyond Good & Evil 2.
