Mari Shimazaki, the character designer for Bayonetta, released new artwork in celebration of the game's 15th anniversary. No new game announcements have been made yet.

Bayonetta Celebrates 15 Years with Special Art from Designer

Bayonetta, the iconic video game series developed by PlatinumGames, has hit a significant milestone—its 15th anniversary. The original game, which introduced players to the bewitching world of the Umbra Witch, debuted in Japan back in 2009 on PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. Since then, the franchise has enjoyed a passionate fanbase and critical acclaim, expanding its reach to other platforms like the Wii U and Nintendo Switch over the years.

In celebration of this milestone, PlatinumGames took to social media to reflect on the journey of Bayonetta. They shared snapshots of the original game, reminding fans where it all began. The post was nostalgic, showcasing Bayonetta’s first appearance and acknowledging how the game strutted onto the gaming scene with a distinctive style and badass protagonist.

Mari Shimazaki, the character designer responsible for the iconic look of Bayonetta, also joined in the anniversary celebrations. On her social media, she shared a piece of artwork that she had been working on amidst her busy schedule. Despite it being a work-in-progress, the drawing beautifully captures the essence of Bayonetta, depicted with the symbolic colors red, blue, and purple which represent the first three games in the series. Shimazaki expressed her intentions to finish the artwork before the anniversary festivities conclude, aiming to encapsulate the soft yet bold nature of the character.

The series creator, Hideki Kamiya, who had left PlatinumGames following the release of Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, had previously expressed a strong personal attachment to the series. Although he’s now parted ways with the studio, Kamiya remains proud of how far Bayonetta has come and is confident that the franchise will continue to thrive without his direct involvement.

Sadly, this year also marked the passing of Atsuko Tanaka, the original Japanese voice actress for Bayonetta. Her contributions to the character brought to life a persona that was both commanding and charismatic, leaving a lasting impact on the series and its fans.

Furthermore, the franchise's influence has been solidified with the success of its third installment, Bayonetta 3, which was met with high praise and considered by many as the best entry in the series yet. Each game has built upon the last, delivering more of the stylish action and intricate storytelling that fans adore.

Despite no new game announcements associated with the anniversary, the enthusiasm from the community continues unabated. Fans remain eager for any news of future entries and expansions to the Bayonetta universe. Engagements on social media show an active and dedicated fanbase, ready to support the series for many more years.

Bayonetta has undoubtedly made a significant mark on the gaming industry. Its unique blend of over-the-top action, engaging narratives, and a captivating protagonist has set a high bar in its genre. As we celebrate 15 years of Bayonetta, it's clear that her adventures have left an indelible impact on her fans and the world of gaming at large. With continued support from its creators and its community, the Bayonetta series is poised to enchant and entertain for years to come, with all the witchy flair that fans have come to expect.
