In an unexpected move that has stirred up its community, Apex Legends, the popular Battle Royale game developed by Respawn Entertainment, has rolled out a contentious update to its Battle Pass structure beginning with Season 22. Traditionally, players purchased a single Battle Pass each season, which provided access to exclusive content and rewards as they progressed. However, the new strategy has not just altered, but doubled the investment required from its player base.
Starting from Season 22, Apex Legends will split its usual three-month season into two parts, each featuring its own Battle Pass. This effectively doubles the content and the cost, as players will now need to purchase a new Battle Pass for each half of the season. The Battle Passes come in three tiers: the customary free version, a premium version, and a newly introduced premium+ version, with prices set at $9.99 each.
One of the significant changes is that the new Battle Pass cannot be purchased with Apex Coins—a virtual currency previously earned by playing through the levels of the Battle Pass itself. This was a favored feature as it allowed dedicated players to continuously reinvest their earned coins into new seasons, potentially keeping their actual spending to a minimum. With the latest update, players are compelled to use real money to make these purchases, a decision that has been met with considerable backlash from the gaming community.
The design of each half-season’s Battle Pass also poses a challenge to players. You can only unlock the first premium Battle Pass by completing specific challenges within the first two weeks of a season. If these are missed, players will find themselves either forfeiting the associated rewards or paying $20 to cover both premium Battle Passes at once. Those opting for the premium+ path will face an even steeper financial commitment, needing to double their investment to gain access to all offered benefits, including exclusive character skins and instant access to all current season's characters.
Respawn Entertainment explains that this overhaul aims to “improve your experience and progression goals,” citing that the revised Battle Pass model offers double the crafting materials, more Apex Packs, and new Legend-Thematic Packs. The shorter, 60-level format is intended to make achievements more attainable within the reduced time frame of each half-season.
Yet, the community response has been overwhelmingly negative. Players took to social media to express their frustrations, critiquizing the abandonment of Apex Coins for Battle Pass purchases and the perceived greed of implementing real-world payments. Some fans fear these changes could alienate the player base, especially those unwilling or unable to commit more money towards the game.
As the ramifications of these changes continue to unfold, the overall reception by the community will likely guide the future decisions of Respawn Entertainment. Whether this new Battle Pass system improves player engagement or diminishes it further is something that only time will tell. Meanwhile, the company may need to consider balancing profitability with player satisfaction to maintain its popular standing in the competitive gaming market. Amidst the criticism, there is a consensus that the game’s management needs to address community concerns to avoid long-term repercussions on its loyal fan base.
