The Anbernix RG35XX SP is drawing significant attention as a standout product in the retro gaming space, particularly among enthusiasts of handheld emulation devices. Its design, a nostalgic nod to Nintendo's popular Game Boy Advance SP (GBA SP), is not only a tribute but also an enhancement of the original.
At a cursory glance, the RG35XX SP almost mirrors the iconic GBA SP with its clamshell design. Although similar, Anbernic has introduced several modifications. The device is slightly larger and thicker than its inspiration. This size adjustment still allows it to fit in an original GCA SP carry case, albeit snugly. Anbernic’s adaptation extends to the controls as well; it expands on the two action buttons of the GBA SP by offering four, alongside an increase to four shoulder buttons which, despite their functionality, present a noticeable rattle when the device is shaken.
Navigating the device’s interface has also been adapted for modern usability. The classic power switch from the GBA SP is replaced by a more contemporary power button paired with a separate 'Reset' key. The original volume slider has been substituted with a contemporary two-button rocker, enhancing user experience without deviating too much from the familiar layout.
For connectivity and storage, the RG35XX SP is equipped with modern essentials — a USB-C port for charging and a mini-HDMI port for video output, allowing gamers to connect the handheld to an HD TV for a larger viewing experience. Unlike the GBA SP, which features a cartridge slot, the RG35XX SP includes dual MicroSD card slots and reinstates the 3.5mm headphone jack, absent in the original model.
The tactile feel of the controls is another significant improvement. The D-pad and buttons are responsive and offer more travel than the original GBA SP’s controls, greatly enhancing gameplay comfort and precision. However, this improvement comes with a caveat — the controls produce a distinct clicking sound that might be disruptive for some users.
The display of the RG35HX SP marks a dramatic improvement over the GBA SP. While the GBA SP's earlier model, the AGS-001, struggled with a dim front-lit screen, and even the later AGS-101 model which featured a back-lit screen, the RG35XX’s 3.5-inch, 640x480 IPS screen sets a new standard. It offers superior color, brightness, viewing angles, and contrast, providing an unparalleled viewing experience in the realm of handheld retro gaming devices.
On the software front, the RG35XX SP runs on a Linux-based operating system and encounters some typical complications seen in stock software of Anbernic’s devices. The unit comes pre-loaded with a variety of emulation options, though performance can vary. Initial setups might be challenging due to interface complexities; however, using the RetroArch menu, a popular multi-system emulation front-end, offers a better experience, mimicking the original aspect ratios and applying filters that enhance visuals dramatically, especially for games from the Game Boy era.
Performance-wise, the device operates on the Allwinner H700 chipset, which adeptly handles emulation for a plethora of retro systems, including but not limited to the Mega Drive, SNES, and PC Engine. The emulation shines especially for Game Boy and GBA titles, leveraging the handheld’s design inspiration. Nevertheless, the absence of an analog stick limits the emulation of more modern consoles like the N64 and Dreamcast and poses challenges for PSP emulation.
Battery performance is commendably robust. With the RG35XX SP, users can expect between seven to eight hours of gameplay, surpassing the standard duration observed in many contemporary handhelds.
Unfortunately, Anbernic's execution of the sleep function is notably flawed. Designed to allow users to pause and resume gameplay by opening and closing the clamshell, this feature does not perform consistently, which could detract from its utility until further firmware updates are released.
To sum it up, the Anbernic RG35XX SP emerges as an impressive evolution of the Game Boy Advance SP. Its design fidelity paired with enhanced functionalities and superior emulation performance makes it a compelling choice for retro gaming enthusiasts. While some issues such as the noisy buttons and imperfect sleep function exist, they are minor compared to the overall quality and performance of the device, making the RG35XX SP a worthwhile investment for anyone looking to dive back into the golden era of handheld gaming with a modern twist.
