Once you activate "Catch Mode" on either the red or blue table, a 2-minute window of opportunity opens for you to try and capture a Pokémon. To unlock the Pokémon, you must hit the pop bumpers a total of 6 times. Each hit reveals 1/6th of an image of the Pokémon you are attempting to capture. Once the image is complete, the Pokémon appears on the table, and you must hit it with the ball 4 times to successfully capture it. This adds the Pokémon to your Pokédex and earns you valuable points.
Another exciting feature in Pokémon Pinball is the "Evolution Mode." When activated, this mode gives you a 2-minute window to select a captured Pokémon from the current game in progress and attempt to evolve it into its next form. This is the only way to add the evolved form to your Pokédex. To evolve a Pokémon, you must hit targets on the playfield. There are up to 6 targets available, but only 3 of them contain the items you need to evolve your Pokémon. The remaining targets trigger time-wasting sequences before you can hit more targets. Hitting a target with an item reveals the item on the playfield, which you must collect with the ball. Once you've collected 3 items, the center of the board opens up, and sinking the ball into the hole successfully evolves the Pokémon.
