Galaga '88 takes the iconic gameplay of the original Galaga and adds a whole new level of complexity and difficulty. The game is divided into 29 stages spread across eight worlds. But what sets Galaga '88 apart is its dimensional travel feature, which allows the starship Galaga to accelerate between stages, worlds, and even to higher dimensions.
Each world in Galaga '88, with the exception of the third and eighth, culminates in a Challenging Stage. These stages are not to be taken lightly, as they present a unique challenge for players. As the on-screen announcement "That's Galactic Dancin'!" appears, a YM2151-generated song starts playing and the enemy formations begin to dance. The enemies' designs and formations change based on the player's current dimension. To conquer the Challenging Stage, players must destroy all forty enemies before they fly away off the screen.
But here's a fun twist – if players manage to refrain from touching any controls throughout the entire Challenging Stage, they are awarded a "secret bonus" ranging from 10,000 to 25,000 points. This bonus is equal to the "special bonus" that would have been awarded for destroying all forty enemy aliens instead. It's a tricky challenge, but the rewards are worth it.
Galaga '88 introduces a variety of new enemies and behaviors to keep players on their toes. These special enemies are worth different amounts of bonus points when destroyed. Some enemies have the ability to combine into larger enemies that require multiple hits to defeat. Others appear in eggs and explode into a dazzling shower of fireworks. Some enemies even grow stronger with each hit, while others wear armor that makes them invincible while in formation.
In addition to the unique enemy behaviors, certain enemies drop formations of tiny creatures that wriggle their way down the screen, adding an extra layer of challenge. And just when players think they have seen it all, some enemies act as escorts to incoming groups of enemies, only to quickly dive at the player before leaving the game.
To make things even more interesting, each stage also features various obstacles that appear once the enemy formation is complete. These obstacles can be destroyed with either one or several shots, and the first obstacle on each stage leaves behind a "Warp Capsule" for players to collect.
At the start of the game, players can choose to begin with one or two Galaga starships, which determines the number of remaining lives. The game comes to an end either when the final boss is defeated or when the player's last ship is destroyed or captured. If the player's last ship is lost, they have the option to continue the game by inserting another credit.
The Game Over screen provides players with a breakdown of their hit-miss ratio and a visual representation of their progress. If players manage to reach Stage 27, they are treated to a picture of the final boss. Its appearance will be damaged if defeated, but silhouetted if not.
It's worth noting that if the arcade operator has enabled the "continue" option, players cannot continue if they are defeated on Stages 27 to 29. This adds an extra layer of challenge and strategy, encouraging players to make every move count.
